This post is about my new favourite restaurant. *swallow saliva”
I followed some positive reviews on this restaurant from hungrygowhere website and visited this particular Japanese restaurant at Mohammed Sultan Road. Actually I was there only for ramen as I was craving for good ramen, but the hungrygowhere website seems to say many of their other items were fantastic as well. Let the pictures do the talking.

The signboard and shopfront of the restaurant. See those articles being laminated and pasted on the two sides of the main entrance? They are all good reviews.

The interior of the restaurant. Looks cosy right? It’s a very small place. Probably less than 10 tables in the whole restaurant. There are really many different types and brands of sake for you to choose from. The sake bottles are displayed on the shelves on the top left hand corner of the picture. I am not a sake-lover so didn’t try those. When inside the restaurant, you will smell a very strange smell which reminded me of the times we were in Japan. Some very Japanese smell. Hahaha.

This is their menu. Looks old and very used. Has manny many many many pages of food items for you to choose from. Yummy.

Top: Chashumen; Bottom: Kyushu Special Ramen
Aiyah, it’s my bad habit, I was too gluttony and quickly dug into my bowl of chashumen once it reached our table. Failed to take photos of the original food. Sorry about that. Anyway it was really very delicious. Yh’s Kyushu Special Ramen comes with fried ebi tempura and tori karaage and the tempura was average only. However the tori karaage was fantastic!!!!! It’s actually fried chicken and the chicken was well-marinated. I must specially mention the SOUP. Both our soups were different. Mine was plain shoyu soup and his was something that has a mixture of garlic, beansprout and seaweed. Initially, I thought his wasn’t nice as I don’t like beansprouts in my soup, but later on, mine was too salty and the liking died down, while his was getting better and better with every gulp. However, I must still give credit to my shoyu soup, it was good-tasting and beats many other shoyu soups elsewhere. Definitely can meet my standard. The ramen was soft and yet Q, you’ve gotta try it to see if you like such ramen. I personally like it.. Still loving it.
Anyway, we had this for brunch as we started eating at only around 2 pm. Beforehand I was online intensively searching for good restaurants on hungrygowhere. When we reached, there were 2 tables of customers who had finished eating. After they left, Yh and I were the only customers left. It was really a great way to start the day for us as we left the restaurant feeling so satisfied. I think it’s probably the best ramen place we have ever tried in Singapore so far.
Maybe you all have some other favourite Japanese restaurants out there, but do try this if you have not! Enjoy. Hope this restaurant always remains so low-key, so that we won’t have to end up queueing up just to enjoy it.

Some additional information about the restaurant:
Place: 33, Mohammed Sultan Road, #01-03
Menu Prices: e.g. Chashumen: $10++, Kyushu Special Ramen: $12++ (comes with 2 ebi tempura and 2 pieces of tori karaage), Beef Teppanyaki Set (Includes rice, miso soup and something else): $22++, Tonkatsu Set (Includes rise, miso soup and something else): $13++. Side dishes like Agedashi Tofu: $6++, Gyoza (6 pieces): $7++, blah blah blah. Those were all I remember as I am aiming to eat those the next time I go there.
After you finish eating your food, they will also serve you free watermelon as dessert. Pleasant surprise.
Comparison with other restaurants: Actually another Japanese restaurant I like is Tonkichi (Their Rosu Katsu is great!). It’s hard to compare Hakata with them as their specialty is different? Tonkichi is famous for their tonkatsu while Hakata is like everything-also-serve. In terms of price, I would say Hakata is much cheaper as it took us only $25 to fill our stomachs while Tonkichi will most likely be around $50 for a 2-persons’ meal. There was one really sucky Japanese restaurant we used to go to (I don’t know why we were so stupid to donate money to them during then), called Hoshigaoka. Wah lao… They used to serve fantastic agedashi tofu and pork katsu don but now the standard has dropped drastically while its price increased crazily. Siao one. Haha. Once they tried to entice old customers with a 30% discount in their birthday month, and Yh and I ordered one don and one udon and one agedashi dofu. We were shocked that after the discount, the meal still cost $30+, considering that we did not even order those expensive bento sets.. Definitely not worth the price for the food quality. Bad Bad….
